How to Build Confidence When You Were Never Taught How

You walk into a room and you feel it before anyone has even looked at you, that small tightening in your chest, the quiet sense that you have already been measured and come up short. You have gotten good at hiding it by now, good at looking like someone who does not care what other people think, someone who already has it all figured out. Most days it works, and nobody sees how much of you is holding its breath underneath.

I know that feeling because I spent most of my life wearing it like a second face. People met me and saw someone untouched by what others thought, someone who had already made peace with herself, and I let them believe it, because there was a younger version of me underneath who was never taught how to feel sure of herself, and I was terrified of anyone seeing her. If you are reading this, then some part of you already knows exactly what I am describing.

I have helped so many people stand back up, and yet there was one person I kept refusing to turn around and look at, until I could not avoid her any longer.
