Why the Right Person Can Change You in Three Sentences

There is something about you that people have pointed out for years. A friend mentions it gently, your mother mentions it far less gently, and every single time you nod along and change absolutely nothing. It is not that you are stubborn exactly, it is that the words slide off the way they always have, until one ordinary day the very same sentence comes out of a different mouth, someone you look up to, and for reasons you cannot explain it lands in a way it never has before.

For me the sentence was "stand straight," and it was not my mother who finally got it through to me, though she had said it my whole life. It was one particular person, someone I look up to more than I have ever told them, and the day they said it three times something shifted in me that I still cannot fully explain, so here is what I keep turning over, why can we hear the same true thing a hundred times and stay exactly where we are, right up until that one person finally says it.

It took one person, three sentences, and a feeling afterwards so sharp I have decided to keep it for the rest of my life. Here is why.
