The Science of Being Seen

The Science of Being Seen

I want to explain something about your brain, because once you understand this, the fear of being seen will never look the same to you.

Deep inside your brain there is a little alarm system. Its only job is to keep you safe. The problem is, it cannot tell the difference between real danger and emotional discomfort. So when you are about to be seen, wearing the dress you love, taking the photo, walking into the room without hiding, that alarm goes off exactly as if a tiger walked in. That tightness in your chest, that voice saying cover up, stay small, don't draw attention, that is just the alarm, not the truth about your body.

But here is the beautiful part. Your brain also has a built-in learning system. Whatever you experience again and again, it slowly stops treating as danger. So every time you let yourself be seen anyway, the alarm rings a little softer. Wear the dress ten times, it gets quieter. Show up in a hundred photos, it barely whispers. One day, being visible in your own body feels completely normal, and sometimes you even start to enjoy it.

This is why women who seem comfortable in their skin are not braver than you, and their bodies are not better than yours. Their alarm has simply gone quiet, because they kept showing up while it was still ringing. They trained their brain, and you can train yours the exact same way.

So the next time you feel the urge to hide, remember, it is only an alarm, and every time you let yourself be seen anyway, you are turning the volume down. Body confidence is not something you are born with, it is something you build, one uncomfortable moment of being seen at a time.
